Defining Tools for a New Learning Space: Writing and Reading Class Blogs was the article I read from Merlot by JOLT
Storyboards
There are many types of them. Free software or special programs you can buy. However, they all say the same thing....plan, plan, plan. Make sure you have an idea before you shoot the commercial.
Make sure your plan is being consistant.
Have pictures along with your narration.
I particularly liked the pdf and can see me using it with my sixth graders for a baginning of school year project. Small groups make a movie to introduce themselves to the class and teacher. this will set the tone for the school year of hands-on learning.
It will also help when I have my math class working on their podcasts to explain fraction problems. they will have already learned one method for planning a presentation.

Planning seems to be the key element for any creative endeavor. I wish our students realized this. They usually jump right into final product with no real plan. The storyboards, like webs, outlines, and Thinking Maps, are a valuable addition to our toolbox of prewriting tools.
I also agree with you that our students need more than one method of presentation. One of my focuses this year is to incorporate podcasting. Posters and PowerPoints have been completely wrung out in my sixth grade classroom.
Hi!
I do agree with Patti, that planning seems to be a big part of creativity (though it seems somewhat counter-intuitive-plan to be creative?) But to play devil's advocate, I refer back to something Kathleen wrote-students are more willing to make mistakes and re-do things, especially with technology related projects-so how does this jive with the whole planning process we find so necessary?
One suggestion as well...if you are planning to do podcasts on fractions, you may want to try an application called voicethread (voicethread.com)...it allows for visuals as well as recorded voice-excellent for math (you can draw on top of the visuals as well).

Wow!! Looks like you are planning a fun year with your six graders. You are definitaly diving ino technology. I believe that as a teacher if we show our students how we plan, they will pick up something. I know that my week does not go well when I don't plan my lesson out step by step.
